The Southern Illinois University Visual Identity Manual is more than a guide—it's the foundation that strengthens our connection, ensuring that SIU’s transformative impact reaches every corner of campus and community. By aligning the visual identity across colleges, schools, and programs, we uphold a cohesive and unified SIU presence that amplifies the essence of our spirited and supportive community.
Key Aspects of the Visual Identity Policy
- Consistency as Core: The new visual identity guidelines, including specified type fonts, marks, and signatures, are not only authorized but required across all media. This consistency is what turns our message into a recognizable, powerful voice.
- Flexible within Unity: While consistency is critical, there’s flexibility to address the unique needs of various units across the university, allowing each part of SIU to shine while staying part of the whole.
- University Communications and Marketing Oversight: To maintain and enhance this identity, University Communications and Marketing monitors its use and provides necessary resources. This team also approves the use of SIU marks by outside vendors and student groups for commercial purposes, supporting both internal cohesion and brand integrity.
Trademark Use on Commercial Goods
The SIU name and logo represent our values and are registered marks that extend beyond merchandise—they are a source of pride, a symbol of loyalty, and a reminder of the determination and resilience that defines the Saluki family. For any group or manufacturer aiming to use these marks on items like T-shirts or bumper stickers, securing permission is essential. Each item carrying our brand mirrors our dedication to high expectations and engagement, linking every Saluki to SIU’s broader mission to defy the odds and accomplish the remarkable.
All manufacturers who produce goods bearing any of the university’s trademarks must either be licensed or receive special permission to produce such products without a formal license agreement.
In every application, our visual identity doesn't just convey our look—it reflects the grit, creativity, and ambition that drive SIU forward.
Photo, Video, and Graphics
Visual imagery is at the core of our brand and should convey and evoke strong emotions and foster a sense of connection. The primary focus should be on human connection, capturing moments that resonate deeply with viewers.
Photography and Videography should support the mission through visually compelling marketing and communication materials. Every image should reinforce the university’s values and goals while supporting our brand.
Creating Brand Images
- Immediate Impact: Photos should captivate the viewer instantly. This can be achieved by featuring an easily recognizable subject, ensuring interesting composition, and maintaining an uncluttered background.
- Emotional Resonance: Imagery should strike an emotional chord and capture live, authentic moments. The goal is to evoke feelings that draw viewers into the scene and make them feel a part of the experience.
- Natural Poses: The imagery of people should feel natural and not overly staged. Subjects should appear relaxed and genuine, as if unaware of the camera.
- Authenticity: Strive for a sense of authenticity in every image. The photos should look as if the camera was invisible to the subjects, capturing real moments and emotions.
- Empowerment: Capture a feeling of empowerment and control in the subjects. Images should depict individuals who are confident and capable, reflecting the thriving culture of the university.
- Unique Expressions: Highlight individual and unique expressions of the university's culture. Each image should showcase the diversity and vibrancy of the community, emphasizing personal stories and achievements.
